Printer then spent a shitload of cash and became a Cisco engineer. Did that for a bit and got the arse.
Trained as a train driver 8 years ago and not looked back.
42 now and hopefully keep a clean licence and my health and it will see me thru til I retire.

I like the work I do, I hated the commute into London, I still work in the same industry but have cut my commute from 2 hours door to door to 15 minutes, couldn't be happier at the moment.

Rather than change career, change the location.

" What about a porn star? "

I know an ex Catholic priest who makes a living as a stand-in prick.
When the star of the show for some reason cant get it up, my Catholic friend can summon an erection on demand.
This particular skill ensures him an excellent income

Found out today that I've got a job working for John Lewis, well happy.

Driving? Heard it is one of the better jobs out there, but scratch something and the hi vis and clipboard brigade swarm around in force .

Blokes I know was a solicitor then trained to become an airline pilot for BA. Worked out well for him but he says that looking back it was a mental decision and if he'd known how mental it was he'd never have taken the step

Most blokes I see working the floors at John Lewis seem to be gay. Personally I think its a good thing.

why do you despise managing people? I enjoy seeing people grow and develop under my tutelage. plus finally people laugh at my jokes.

in all seriousness in the same boat although only 37. been an FC for a few years now and struggle with motivation. however I see mates working fucking hard for long hours and I think life is too important for wasting it in the office. my aim is fd then cfo/md ideally.

When I say "only three years" I mean that in a negative way. Was a bad decision in lots of ways. Wish I hadn't changed.

I chose to do my passions so never had this problem but seen several people either commit suicide or go on drugs.

Always do your passions. Nothing else.

Re: Career change in your 40's
At 36 I decided to become a teacher. I completed the one year training and accepted a job then resigned before I had actually started the job because I realised what a shot, thankless job it was. Went back to day job at lower level so lost several years in career. Only 3 years later I've got back to same salary. Realised that I'm good in this field so no longer want to try the greener grass elsewhere

I have too.
I am a programmer and ended up managing as well as developing and doing a bit project management on the side. Was also in an industry I hated and the commute to London pissed me off even more.
Five years ago I had had enough one morning, went for a smoke and a think and resigned at lunch time having decided to go and the bit I did enjoy and was actually good at which is programming and leaving the tedious meeting behind. Now work as a web developer full time locally and happy at work for the first time in ages.

Re: Career change in your 40's
Been there as well, hated the London commute chasing money and eventually at 46 got out and managed to work for myself from home on an 'if it suits me' basis, but I'm in still the same un-enjoyable sector.

The only thing Ive seen recently that I thought I'd have a go at is an airport operations job working in the aircraft de-icing team - spraying antifreeze on jets prior to take-off, from a high- power hose sat in a cherry picker canopy!

Fuck knows why I liked the idea of it, but the £8.50 on hour soon cleared my head.
